La necesidad de la pasantía para profesores de educación física
Un aspecto acerca de mi carrera, estudié Educación física y recreación en la Universidad de Gallaudet. El departamento de Educación física se encuentra bajo el departamento de Deporte y salud.
Mi carrera se enfoca en la enseñanza a niños desde la primaria hasta la universidad, hay todo un rango, uno decide qué grupo prefiere enseñar con diferente tipos de deportes. También uno puede enfocarse en la terapia física, administración de deportes, etcétera.
Sin embargo, esta carrera necesita mejorar su preferencia, su enseñanza para la diversidad de los estudiantes. Los estudiantes en realidad sienten que hay una carencia de oportunidades de pasantías, no hay suficientes oportunidades en el plantel específicamente, que deberían brindar oportunidades de pasantías a nivel nacional para nuestro campo.
Tampoco existen oportunidades durante el verano, no hay cursos durante el verano. Hay muchas áreas que necesitan mejorar para apoyar mejor nuestra carrera, como más cursos durante el verano así como más pasantías.
Otro punto es que no hay suficientes profesores, solo cuentan con cinco. Se encuentran en apuros en encontrar profesores, substitutos, o terminan brindando un horario de cursos muy limitado. El tiempo también es limitado, no hay oportunidades para tener tutoría de manera individualizada y cosas así.
Tengo la esperanza que esto mejore, esto se podrá conseguir si los estudiantes dan a conocer sus voces, dando su opinión para que puedan ser reconocidos por las autoridades y así pueda darse un cambio. Un cambio en el departamento, en la filosofía, en los métodos y políticas.
Espero que la Educación física cambie en un futuro, que mejore para el bien de los estudiantes.
Enhancing Physical Education
I will talk about my undergraduate major which is Physical Education and Recreation, PER for short, at Gallaudet University. Basically, my major focuses on bilingual teaching approach that accommodates Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing individuals ranging from elementary through college in the field of PER. This major is preparing us to become leaders in promoting physical activities with skills of planning, leading, and managing recreation, sports, and physical activity programs in a variety of community settings.
However, I believe the Department of PER can enhance its the program for students. The PER staffs clearly display lots of favoritism among students. We the students feel the PER program lacks of the support on getting us the internship opportunity on campus. It is my hope the PER would provide us more support on applying for internship, not just limited to DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) area but all over the United States that aligns with our major and interest fully.
As of now, our PER department does not offer any summer internship or course to take in summertime, which is a disappointment many of us. In addition, we only have a total of five PER faculty and that is really not sufficient. It ends up limiting the number of PER courses offered at Gallaudet. Finally, I hope the PER department would continually work on improving its department and teaching methods for our future incoming PER major students.
