ASL Version of Description
Translation is a skill that is important for both developing competency in interpreting as well as a skill that is needed in ongoing practice. This module provides support to novice interpreters in considering approaches to translating texts from ASL video to written English. The resource includes both explanations of processes and the theories behind different approaches. Participants are also able to undertake activities to practice different approaches to translation.
This online course introduces the process of translation working between two languages with the ability to take the time to analyze, review, revise, and go through a Quality Assurance process. Learn different approaches to translation and how context and audience help to determine how a translation should be crafted for different purposes. This independent study will guide you through a translation process and then support you in doing it on your own. Translation can be both a foundational skill that supports your understanding of language – as well as a useful skill to be part of your future practice.
Successful participants will be able to:
- compare and contrast two processes for creating translations;
- identify the audience and context for translations;
- draft, revise, and polish translations of at least two ASL texts; and
- compare and contrast translations to other participants’ work.
