Stepping Stones for Novice Interpreters    TO    Moodle logo

The CATIE Center is transitioning its Stepping Stones courses to Moodle.  Canvas has suspended its Free for Teacher version after it was hacked.  On May 28-29, Canvas opened Free for Teacher site to allow us to download backups of all our courses. We are working on transitioning courses over to Moodle, a learning management system, that the CATIE Center will have more control over.  You can see our progress at:

New Account

In the transition between Canvas to Moodle, we were not able to transfer work in student accounts. You will need to set up a new account. We have created a guide to support you in that process.

No Confirmation Email

One identified issue is that not everyone is receiving the confirmation emails, so we are manually confirming new accounts 3-4 times daily. So, if you don’t receive a confirmation email, know that we will manually confirm it. If you want, you can email catiecenter@stkate.edu to let us know you are waiting, but through these first few weeks of transition, we will be checking multiple times during the weekdays and twice on each day on the weekend.

Enrolling in Courses

These are the courses we currently have available for enrollment. If you had already registered for them in Canvas, we have sent you the enrollment key for joining the courses.  You need a new Moodle account before trying to enroll.  You can see all the available courses at: https://catiecenter.cloud

We will then work on restoring access to courses in this order:

  • Ethical Decision-Making for Novice Interpreters
  • Dealing with Microaggressions for Novice Interpreters
  • Interpreting in Video Remote Settings for Novice Interpreters
  • Interpreting Job Interviews
  • Nervous System Management for Novice Interpreters
  • Language at Work: Deliberate Practice for Novice Interpreters
  • Step by Step: Effective Skill-Focused Practice for Novice Interpreters

FAQs

During this time, we are working to move courses to Moodle. We also will be moving courses into Canvas Commons.  Both of these options will allow you to review materials without enrolling.  (Moodle allows the choice of “Guest Access” so you can see a course, but not any of the information posted by those who are students in it.)

We will be creating a Dive In dissemination page that will provide links for all of these different types of access. If you have already received copies of the courses from us, we will be sending an email to all of you once the transition has happened so we can provide you information for how to get access to the courses again.

Unfortunately, we were not able to save and transfer student work. If you were partially through a course, you can simply note in required boxes that you did the assignment previously in Canvas.  We are sorry that this information was lost.

The Dive In project continues on to September 30, 2026 and we will use Moodle for access to our resources at least until that time. Canvas has said that they will introduce a new version to replace Free for Teacher in the fall and we will see if that will fit the CATIE Center’s needs moving forward. We are exploring other options to allow for affordable access to our resources.

We will appreciate your feedback about using Moodle.

With such short notice regarding the shutdown of Canvas, we made a rapid transition to Moodle and we know that there will be some errors in the courses. We greatly appreciate if you will either post a note in the “Ask CATIE:  Support Forum” in each course or send an email to catiecenter@stkate.edu with a link to the page with the error and a description of what isn’t working correctly.

Thank you for your help as we work to make all of the resources available.

If you were members of any of the Dive In cohorts, we will be working to make those activities accessible and will email you with course access information. The 2026 Cohort is now available.  Once we complete that, we will make copies of the information for past cohorts.

We have now figured out this issue for people using iPads. We are working on updating the ways that videos are embedded in the courses so that they will work for all devices.

A Note on CEUs

Because our grant is focused on novice interpreters working toward certification, CEUs are not offered by the CATIE Center.  The CATIE Center has an agreement with the Minnesota Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

For $40 (a cost set by MRID), you can receive ACET or CMP CEUs for this course.  At the end of the course, you will have access to a form to apply for CEUs and receive a link for making the payment.  So, you don’t have to commit to making a payment until you know that you will be able to complete the requirements.  (MRID members receive a free processing of a Stepping Stones workshop, a PINRA, or an Independent Study each year – so if you are an MRID member, you can get this cost waived.) For more information on the CEU process, contact pdc@mrid.org.

No. That requires extra cost for us to make these courses accessible through the app, and we did not have Canvas shutting down as part of our budget. You will need to access the course through a browser on your mobile device, but all of functionality will be there.
