Practicing International Sign Interpretation

In this activity, you will interpret MJ Bienvenu’s ASL lecture, “Are sign language interpreters bilingual?” into International Sign.

Step 1: Interpret Text

This is the source text from a 2014 presentation in which MJ Beinvenu examines if sign language interpreters are proficient bilinguals as expected and if not, is it okay for them to work in the field while still acquiring the language?

After you create your interpretation, assess what went well and what parts were challenging. Use this insight as your review the sample interpretations.

Step 2: Review Sample Interpretations

Before you review the interpretations, Review the sample interpretations created by Octavian Robinson and Sam Harris. Make note of any parts in these interpretations that you would like incorporate in your second attempt.

Step 3: Re-Interpret Text

Now that you have learned from the sample interpretations, take a second attempt at interpreting the source text incorporating the ideas you have taken from the samples from Octavian and Sam.
